ABOUT DR. RUSSELL

Robert C. Russell, M.D., FACS, FRACS, is a clinical Professor of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery in the Division of Plastic Surgery at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine. He is the chairman of Plastic Surgery at St. John’s Hospital in Springfield.

Dr. Russell received his undergraduate B.S. degree from Indiana University while playing football and earning All-American honors. He received his medical degree from Indiana University in 1972. He completed general surgery training at Marion County General Hospital and a one-year hand surgery fellowship at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Indianapolis, Indiana in 1977. He then completed a residency in plastic and reconstructive surgery at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine in Springfield, Illinois in 1979, followed by a one-year fellowship in microsurgery at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Melbourne, Australia in 1980.

He was certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery in 1981 and earned a certificate of added qualification in hand surgery by examination in 1990 and was recertified in 2002.

Dr. Russell was also the first American plastic surgeon to successfully pass the Australian Board examination and is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS).

Dr. Russell is a member of over 20 medical associations and societies, including the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the American Association of Plastic Surgeons, the American College of Surgeons, the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, the American Association for Hand Surgery, the American Society for Reconstructive Microsurgery, and numerous others.

Dr. Russell is an academically accomplished plastic surgeon who has published more than 30 book chapters and over 100 scientific publications. He has made hundreds of local, national, and international lectures and presentations. He has been active in organized plastic surgery and has served as a member or chairman of over 100 regional, state, or national committees. Dr. Russell is the past president of the American Society for Reconstructive Microsurgery, the American Association for Hand Surgery, the Plastic Surgery Educational Foundation, and the American Society for Peripheral Nerve. He served as a member of the American Board of Plastic Surgery and was vice-chairman in 1998. He has also been an oral board examiner for the American Board of Plastic Surgery for over 20 years.

Dr. Russell serves as a director and volunteers his time as a surgeon and teacher with Operation Smile International, caring for children with congenital facial deformities and burns in many countries around the world.

Dr. Russell and his wife, Anne, have two daughters, Kaitlyn and Mirriah, and reside in Springfield.
